Established in 2011 by Evelyn Onyejuruwa, Ankara Miami showcases emerging & established designers from the African Diaspora and their use of Ankara, a well-known West African fabric, as well as other African prints.
This year’s event took place on February 23rd at the FIU Kovens Conference center and featured designs by Circa 24, Sumahrie, Fabion & Mom, Rare Honey, Aku/Akwa Tees, Nana O. Couture, AFR Clothing, Jama Clothing, Oyato Designs, Unapologetic Presence and jewelry by Nzingah-Sankofa’s Child Jewelry Line.
The event featured two beautiful musical performances. One was by Willie Stewart of Embrace Music Foundation, who performed on various drums and at one point requested that Miss Nigeria Florida 2012-13, Ayoyemi Ajimatanrareje, come to the stage and accompany his beats with a dance. She did so flawlessly. The other was by former America’s Got Talent, Adore, who sang a beautiful song about Africa. This song was accompanied with dance by the Ethnotricity Cultural Arts Studio. [ Don't hold me to this last part since I'm only 99% sure.]
So, enjoy the beautiful fashion posted above and consider attending next year’s event.
