Tokyo-based Japanese illustrator and sushi artist, Takayo Kiyota, creates these food art pieces by placing the vegetables on colored rice and rolling them together into their cylindrical form with the use of a bamboo mat.

The hardest part she says, “facial expressions are especially difficult because small ingredients or overly exerted force when wrapping can completely throw things off. It’s always a special moment when I make the first incision to reveal the image.”
