Haitian Cooking: These are a Few of my Favorite Things

Haiti, sweet Haiti.  It’s’ been 21 years now since I’ve left, I was a little short pudgy thing of 8 years old, coming to the US for what I thought would’ve been a routine vacation even though I clearly remember being withdrawn from school… call it denial.  Though it’s been about 2 decade, the island still pulsates within me with what I remember of its vibrant colors, laissez-faire attitude, its pure joy for life and let’s not forget the food!  This post is to share some general Haitian recipes that any and all Haitian people should know of and if you’re of another nationality, this will whet your little tootsies in our foodie culture. Northwood Village is the Place To Be…

…laid back living is the life for me! Ladeedadeeda something else.

While this weekend consisted mostly of beading for a few upcoming shows, tonight Squirrely Shirley & I decided to head out to the Arts Garage in Delray to check out Divas in Art, a cabaret style performance by female impersonators.  Well, we would’ve been approx 30mins late but after spending another 30 mins looking for parking *snicker* we ended up making it just in time for intermission.  A few things you should know about the Arts Garage, it’s cash only.  No debit cards, so bring cash… I warned you.  Also, they do not serve alcohol, but you are able to bring and crack your own alcoholic beverage or any munchies that you feel like bringing!  The venue is cozy, friendly and just has great vibes. I Infuse, You Infuse, We All Infuse Our Spirits!

Grapefruit Tarragon Infused Vodka via NotMartha

Today’s topic?  Infused spirits.  I opened the fridge yesterday to find that I had leftover strawberries in the crisper.  They were on sale at the grocery store so I’d stocked up a little while ago.  Since the remaining berries looked parched, to say the least, I decided to make strawberry infused water, so as not to just throw them away.  That got me to thinking about a post by Frank Bruni on the subject of infused spirits in which he pretty much immersed everything you can think of, from the sane to the insane (ginger, tamarind, peaches, gummy bears… garlic?) into jars filled with vodka.  Below, you’ll find a compilation of some amazing recipes to get your tootsies wet in this intoxicating hobby.
